COLD, WIND, AND WAYNE The Rebel Tournament at Amistad was another cold one. Saturday morning temps were below freezing at launch time. The wind picked up at about 10:30am on Saturday and blew hard with winds gusting to 30 mph and sustained at 20+. All the elements, however didn't keep Wayne Tuaer (owner of The Boat Shop in Universal City) from catching a solid limit both days and finishing about 5 lbs ahead of the rest. Wayne was the leader after Day 1 with a hard earned 16+ lbs, as fishing was pretty tough all day. His fishing partner for the weekend was his son Eric who finished in second after Day 1 with 13+. Ron Carter and his lovely bride to be Debbie Hunter, both had nice limits of 12.64, and 8.97. The Banis boys did well weighing in some nice Pecos River bass. Don had 8.35 and Jason had 5.81. Nik Lazarro also had a nice day with 8.50 lbs, everyone (except the fish) were glad he was able to fish again, it had been awile. Joey Brown (7.49) and Matt Houston (6.95) had 4 fish apiece but could not find the bigger fish. The rest of the field all weighed in at least 1 fish, no one zeroed but the fishing at "The Big Windy" was pretty tough, with water temps in the mid 50's and the wind blowing hard. Saturday night 100% of the contestants as well as a bunch of Ron & Debbie's friends got together to for a bbq. It was a great time of swapping stories, ideas, fishing tips, and lies all the while enjoying good food and drinks.
Sunday morning came way to soon for most of the competitors. Losing an hour to Daylight savings, coupled with the festivities of the night before made it hard to get going Sunday morning. Not to mention the typical spring hurricane that was blowing all morning. Nik Lazzarro got off to a hot start in spite of the cold weather and caught 3 keepers on 3 casts to start his day. Most competitors found the fishing very difficult, however. The people who were on fish the day before found that the fish had moved overnight or had decided to skip breakfast! The morning bite was tough, but at around noon the wind began to lay down a bit and by 1:00pm the fish began to turn on. At weigh in, most anglers stated that they caught most of their fish in the last hour or 2 of the tournament. The heaviest 2 stringers of Sunday came from Matt Houston and Earl Lackey, with 13.30 lbs and 10.09 lbs respectively, and they both said they caught the majority of their fish in the last hour.
Wayne Tauer was able to put another nice limit together to seal the win, putting 2 keepers in the boat late in the day for a Day 2 weight of almost 10 lbs. Matt Houston's Day 2 weight lifted him from 9th on Saturday up to 2nd place. Eric Tauer put together a solid Day 2 to finish in 3rd place. He also won Big Bass of the tournament with a nice fish that was just shy of 7 pounds. Nik Lazarro was steady both days and finished 4th. Ron Carter's great Day 1 kept him in the top 6 with a 5th place finish, Earl Lacky had a great Day 2 to climb the ranks and end up in 6th place.
Overall it was a great weekend for Rebel Bass Club!
